Covergirl maintains a very informative web page when it comes to its animal testing policy. The official statement says:
COVERGIRL is Leaping Bunny approved by Cruelty Free International, which means we’re a Cruelty Free makeup brand across ALL our cosmetic products, EVERYWHERE we’re sold.
As we all know, Leaping Bunny is one of the most trustworthy standards for cruelty in cosmetics. According to Leaping Bunny’s standards, a brand can not be cruelty-free if it does any of these:
- Animal testing by the company itself
- Testing by third parties or ingredient suppliers
- Exporting products to China
Covergirl ticks all these criteria to get its certification.
Cruelty-Free Timeline
Covergirl’s animal testing policy was under the shadow for the longest period of time.
2016 – In 2016, Covergirl got acquired. Since then, Covergirl started to pull out of the Chinese retail market.
2018 – Covergirl finally declared it won’t sell in China anymore. It also got the Leaping Bunny certification in 2018. Every year it reconfirms its cruelty-free status to Leaping Bunny.
Does Covergirl test on Animals?
No, Covergirl does not test on animals. No animal testing is entertained by the suppliers and distributors as well. Covergirl is a Leaping Bunny-certified cruelty-free brand.
Covergirl went through a detailed audit to gain ‘cruelty-free’ recognition. Cruelty Free International checked the brand’s manufacturing process, supply chain, and distribution network for any tress of cruelty.
Does Covergirl sell in China?
Covergirl doesn’t sell its products in China. You won’t find Covergirl products in the retail market of mainland China.
Regarding its product status in the Chinese market, here’s what Covergirl has to say,
COVERGIRL is not sold in China. When it comes to other brands in our portfolio, we understand consumers’ concerns regarding animal testing in China.
Covergirl used to sell its products in China until its 2016 merger. In 2018, it decided to pull out of the China. As a result, Covergirl gained the Leaping Bunny certification.
Does Covergirl manufacture in China?
The majority of Covergirl products are made in the US. The eyeliner, mascara, and a few more products come from its Germany-based manufacturing units. Covergirl does not manufacture in China.
Is Covergirl Vegan?
No, Covergirl is not vegan. But, tit is vegan-friendly as it has taken a positive step towards veganism.
From 2019 onward, Covergirl marks its vegan-friendly products to highlight them to the intended users. Many of its formulas still contain animal-sourced ingredients like beeswax.
It is in the process of upgrading products with substitute vegan ingredients. The new launch ranges are mostly vegan. Cream blush, lip oil, mascara, undercover concealer are among its vegan products.
Is Covergirl Clean?
Covergirl is not clean. It contains harsh chemicals. However, it offers Clean FreshCollection range that is free of parabens, talc, formaldehyde, phthalates and sulfates. I won’t tag Covergirl as a clean beauty brand.
Do I Recommend Covergirl?
Yes, I do! Leaping Bunny is the top-grade certification program. It certifies a brand after a thorough audit. Covergirl has passed all its criteria and achieved Leaping Bunny certification.
Covergirl is also working toward veganism. Not all the products are vegan still but you’ll find good products in its vegan section.
Just one point of caution here. Covergirl works as a subsidiary of a non-cruelty-free brand that passively supports animal testing.
